Big News for Off-Grid Properties: Federal Battery Rebate Now Includes You!

If you live off-grid, you’ve probably been overlooked by most government energy programs, until now. The Federal Labor government’s new Cheaper Home Batteries Program is finally throwing support behind the people powering their homes without the grid. And that’s a game-changer.
Here’s what you need to know, without the fluff.
What Is The Federal Battery Rebate?
Starting July 1, a federal battery rebate will be available for homeowners, businesses and off-grid properties looking to add battery storage. It’s part of a $2.3 billion national scheme to make energy storage more accessible and off-grid homes are officially included.
The rebate:
Offers $370 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of battery capacity
Can cut battery costs by around 30%
Is uncapped and not means tested
Is stackable with state rebates (where available)
How Much Can You Save?
For a typical off-grid system:
13.5kWh battery → $4,995 rebate
10kWh battery → $3,700 rebate
5kWh battery → $1,850 rebate
Off-grid properties and businesses can claim rebates up to 50kWh (max $18,500), even as part of larger 100kWh systems, perfect for farms, remote stations and commercial off-grid sites.

Yes, Off-Grid Homes Qualify
This is a big shift. Most rebate programs in the past required a grid connection. But this one is different, it only requires that the battery is VPP-compatible, not actually connected to one.
That means:
You can be completely off-grid
Your battery just needs to meet standards that allow future virtual power plant (VPP) participation (but you don’t have to join one)
In other words: if your battery is built right, you’re in.
What’s Required?
To claim the federal battery rebate, your battery system must:
Be installed with or alongside solar
Use a Clean Energy Council-approved battery
Be installed by an accredited installer
Be VPP-ready (even if you’re off-grid)
Already bought a battery? You can still claim, as long as you wait until after July 1 to install and connect it.
Why This Matters for Off-Grid Living
If you’re off-grid, you know how crucial it is to have:
Enough storage to ride through cloudy days
A setup that reduces or eliminates generator use
Reliable, scalable systems that just work
This rebate helps you invest in higher-capacity, longer-life batteries, or add more storage to an existing system.
And for those building new off-grid homes, this could slash your up-front costs significantly.

Is Now the Time to Upgrade?
Short answer: yes.
Battery prices are coming down, and this rebate adds a serious boost. If you’ve been running an older gel battery bank or relying too heavily on a diesel generator, this is your moment to step into modern lithium storage, without blowing the budget.
It’s also a smart move for those with existing solar who want to scale up their system or reduce genset runtime.
